Shutter systems find use in microscope systems, telescope systems, many types of camera systems, laser systems - to turn a laser on and off, protection of Photo Multiplier Tubes, in an optical system within a vacuum, controlling the calibration in an IR camera, providing precise exposures in a digital camera system, etc.
Usually a shutter is used within these types of applications because the light source being controlled becomes unstable when turned on and off or light entering a system needs to be precisely controlled, as when capturing an image.
